How to Become a Tow Truck Driver

Working as a tow truck driver offers a rewarding career. People from many backgrounds choose this path.

If you enjoy solving problems and helping others, this job may suit you. Tow truck driving builds practical skills and offers steady demand.

The Queensland towing industry follows strict rules. These rules promote safe and ethical practices.

The Queensland Government sets clear requirements for new drivers. This guide explains how to start your career as a tow truck driver.

The Basics of Becoming a Tow Truck Driver

To operate a tow truck in Brisbane, you need a certificate. You must hold either a:

  • Tow Truck Driver Certificate

  • Tow Truck Assistant Certificate

These certificates allow you to work as a driver or assistant.

Tow Truck Driver Certificate Requirements

To apply for a Tow Truck Driver Certificate, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older

  • Hold a current Australian driver’s licence for the tow truck class

  • Have held your licence for at least three continuous years

  • Pass the Q-SAFE tow truck operational test

  • Have a suitable criminal and traffic history

Tow Truck Assistant Certificate Requirements

To apply for a Tow Truck Assistant Certificate, you must:

  • Be 16 years or older

  • Have a suitable criminal and traffic history

With these certificates, drivers and assistants can:

  • Attend incident scenes, including crashes

  • Tow vehicles seized by police

  • Remove vehicles from private property

However, certificate holders cannot operate independently. You must work under a Tow Truck Licence holder.

Obtaining a Tow Truck Licence

Drivers and assistants must operate under a licensed towing business or individual.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) regulates tow truck licences. These rules ensure towing companies operate safely and ethically.

To obtain a licence, submit the correct application form to your local TMR office.
You can apply as an individual or business.

Licence holders must meet several obligations.

They must:

  • Provide 24/7 towing services

  • Maintain a safe, approved vehicle storage yard

  • Gain government approval for the holding yard location

  • Provide communication equipment at the business premises and in tow trucks

Training to Become a Tow Truck Driver

Queensland does not require formal training for tow truck drivers. However, you must demonstrate safe tow truck operation.

Some employers encourage additional training or industry certificates.

Relevant courses include:

  • Certificate II in Driving Operations

  • Certificate III in Driving Operations

  • TLIC3035 – Manage the Operation of a Tow Truck

Many drivers start as tow truck assistants. Assistants learn practical skills on the job.

After gaining experience, assistants often upgrade to a full Tow Truck Driver Certificate.
